A good example of the bespoke rigid boxes we design for customers in the premium spirits market is the project we undertook in 2022 for the exciting new independent bottling start-up, House of Rum.
House of Rum specialise in unique rum bottlings from Caribbean distilleries, with the flagship product being a gloriously bottled 16-year-old single cask, single distillery XO reserve rum from Venezuela, alongside a catalogue of luxury, one-of-a-kind rums scheduled for release over the coming years. The Need
As a newly founded start-up business, House of Rum needed a premium box that would appeal to their customers and reflect their craft brand aesthetic in order to compete with more established competitors, while – critically – also protecting a sensitive and valuable product in transit. The customer had already designed a bespoke bottle label, so the box branding needed to match this in both style and colour.
The customer was new to the industry and did not have extensive knowledge of premium drinks packaging, so they were looking for a knowledgeable specialist packaging supplier who could take ownership of the design and production process and allow them to focus on developing their target market.
Project Goals
The customer had several interrelated project goals for their product packaging:
- Design a box to protect delicate bottles on the shelf and during shipping
- Display and showcase the House of Rum brand label
- Reflect the premium nature of the product
How We Helped
After discussing the customer’s needs and ideas for their bottle packaging, we suggested a hinged lid-style rigid box as the best and most cost-effective solution for their outcomes.
Hinged lid boxes are sturdy rigid boxes with a robust inner tray and a hinged lid, which allows for easy access to get the bottle in and out while maintaining a luxurious look. This makes them an ideal packaging solution for deluxe spirits and prestige gift products, as well as for brands – such as House of Rum – whose identity is steeped in artisan heritage and tradition.
In order to safely protect delicate bottles of liquid, we created durable inner box packaging for our client and then, to save them time and additional costs, we also produced bespoke outer casing for the rigid boxes to enhance the sturdiness of the overall packaging solution. This also helped to cut down on waste and offered greater sustainability than foam or plastic packaging, whilst also improving the level of protection for the product.
Our team worked closely with the customer throughout the design process, providing printed sheets so that the client could verify that the colours we used were consistent with their labels and brand identity, and the colours matched when printed on black.

Equipped with their stylish protective packaging and the gorgeous product label and bottle design supplied by the customer, House of Rum were able to successfully launch their flagship product on time and within budget.
